Why should I become a member of the Beaumont Area Council of the Blind (BACB)?

When becoming a member of BACB for only $10 a year, you automatically become a member of the American Council of the Blind (ACB) and the American Council of the Blind of Texas (ACBT). Dues are as follows: $3 for BACB; $2 for ACBT; and $5 for ACB. There are activities, special events, an annual state and national conference and convention, in addition to other opportunities designed to educate, engage, and empower you to achieve personal goals and aspirations.

Can you share some of the benefits of membership?

Yes. Subscribe to the BACB Express members only group email list. Meet people who will understand varying levels of vision loss and eye conditions, share mutual education and employment goals; life experiences; hobbies; interests, access blindness related newsletters and other publications. Network with others as you join in on our periodic Friday Night Social Hour. Members have the opportunity to share their skills and abilities by actively participating in monthly meetings, serving on a committee, as an officer, member of the board of directors or participating in, and/or planning community events.

Are there meetings that I can attend for support and are they only in-person meetings?

Yes. We meet on the third Saturday of each month from 1:30PM-3:00PM Central, with the exception of the July Summer Break and the December Holiday Break. You have the choice to participate in person or dial into the designated conference call line, which is a ten digit number with no need to enter an access code. All necessary details to join us will be provided prior to each meeting.

Do you welcome people who are from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities?

Absolutely. We believe that there is strength in diversity and more can be achieved when members offer unique perspectives. A diverse group also has acquired knowledge, experience, and skills that can assist us in becoming better as we work together to  accomplish organizational goals.

Do you include students in your organization?

Yes. We are prepared to collaborate with parents of students who are blind or have low vision to assist them in their personal endeavors. Junior members are ages 13-17 and only pay $3 for annual membership. Additionally, we accept applications for the BACB Destiny Scholarship during the fall semester of attending a college, trade school or university. 

Are leaders of the organization friendly, respectful, and welcoming?

Yes. We strive to meet you where you are and assist you in achieving personal independence. We also provide resources, person centered information, support and care calls.

Is it possible for me to read books, learn about how to use technology, read email, use my personal computer, read my U.S. mail and other important documents? Is there a way for me to participate in the local, state, and federal elections process and vote independently?

 Yes. There are alternatives to actively participate in life activities and training sessions that assist in building skills that increase the opportunity to independently complete daily tasks. Each month, we discuss topics of interest and share inspiration to assist you in moving forward. We periodically have guest speakers to share their knowledge, along with programs and services that they provide.
